Recent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight

The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...

Basic and clinical aspects of olfaction.

Disturbances of olfaction are a common occurrence in many neurological and neurosurgical patients and their correct diagnosis might be helpful in management and enhancement of quality of life. However, olfaction is seldom checked in most neurosurgical units and the "smell bottles" are often either absent or out of date. This chapter reviews systematically recent advances in our understanding of...

Comparison of Olfactory Function before and After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.  Material...

Review of the upper airway, including olfaction, as mediator of symptoms.

The upper airway serves as air conditioner, filter, and warning device. Two neurological modalities, olfaction and trigeminal chemoreception, inform us of the chemical qualities of the air we breathe. A number of poorly understood conditions, including nonallergic rhinitis, irritant-induced rhinitis, odor-triggered asthma, odor-triggered panic attacks, chemical-induced olfactory dysfunction, an...

Amygdaloid lesion-induced obesity: relation to sexual behavior, olfaction, and the ventromedial hypothalamus.

Lesions of the amygdala have long been known to produce hyperphagia and obesity in cats, dogs, and monkeys, but only recently have studies with rats determined that the effective site is the posterodorsal amygdala (PDA)-the posterodorsal medial amygdaloid nucleus and the intra-amygdaloid bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. There is a sex difference; female rats with PDA lesions display greater...
